The Field Kitchen Cookbook Club: Mission Chinese by Danny Bowie and Chris King

The Field Kitchen is a mobile series of cooking classes led by Bay Area culinary instructors Frances Wilson and Jen Knapp. This hand-on class is part of a series called The Cookbook Club, where we will explore the recipes from some of the most exciting recently-published cookbooks. Take just one class, or sign up for all four! Each class is $130, or $470 if you sign up for the entire series of four.

Under the guidance of Frances and Jen, you will learn tips and techniques that will make all of these recipes ones that you will be inspired to recreate at home.

The class will run from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. and include lunch. Feel free to bring wine or beer to share with the meal.

Saturday, June 4th–The Mission Chinese Food Cookbook by Danny Bowie and Chris King
In this class, we will explore the wildly popular Chinese Fusion cuisine that started as a two-night a week pop-up restaurant in San Franciscos Mission District and morphed into two of the most creative restaurants on both coasts. Known for its surprising flavor combinations, tons of umami and an often-intense level of heat, the food of Mission Chinese may not be authentic Chinese but it is certainly unforgettable.

You will learn iconic recipes from the restaurant such as:
-Tiger Salad
-Smashed Cucumbers with Sesame Paste and Salted Chili Condiment
-Mapo Tofu with Ground Pork
-Salt Cod Fried Rice
-Kung Pao Pastrami

About Frances and Jen:
Frances is a seasoned food professional who taught the professional culinary program at the renowned Tante Marie’s Cooking School in San Francisco for more than ten years and now teaches at the Silverado Cooking School in Napa. Prior to that, she was the chef at Lalimes restaurant in Berkeley.

Jen taught recreational classes and led private culinary events at Tante Marie’s Cooking School for 15 years, in addition to working as a private chef and caterer throughout the Bay Area. She is also certified as a Master Taster with ChefsBest, where she does sensory evaluation of consumer food and beverage products.

Frances and Jen are both endlessly curious about food and cooking and enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge with others.

Cancellation policy:
A full refund will be issued if we are notified 5 or more days prior to a class. If you cancel a class between 48 hours and less than 5 days, a 50 percent refund will be offered. If you cancel less than 48 hours before the start of a class, we regret that no refunds or credits can be issued, however you are welcome to send someone in your place.
